QUALITATIVE RESEARCH WORKSHOP

Dr. Adebola Adejimi will spend her Fogarty fellowship year at the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria (IHVN) under the mentorship of Dr. Sylvia Adebajo and Prof. Clement Adebamowo. Her research will focus on evaluating a teacher-led intervention in secondary schools to improve knowledge of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection and HPV vaccine uptake for the prevention of cervical cancer among adolescents in Lagos State, Nigeria.

Yewandeis a Paediatric Dentist (bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery from the University of Ibadan). She’s the immediate past Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Bayero University, Kano where she lectures clinical students and consults with Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. Her research areas include preventive oral health practices, developing sustainable approaches to improving oral health-related quality of life, particularly in the pediatric age group.

INSIGHT (University of Maryland, Baylor College, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Pittsburg)

Dr Barnabas Alayande is a General Surgeon with the Center for Equity in Global Surgery at the University of Global Health Equity. His career focus is to provide general surgical patient care in Africa with a public health bias, while driving improvisation, contextualized surgery, and disruptive surgical technologies. He seeks to pioneer local advances in equity driven surgical education, global surgery research, trauma care, and health management.

Selena An, MD, MSPH, MA is a general surgery resident at the University of North Carolina with an interest in thoracic and abdominal surgical oncology. She has studied maternal and child health in Tanzania and health policy in China. As a Fogarty global health postdoctoral fellow, she will spend a year at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi focusing on understanding barriers to care for women with breast cancer using mixed methods research.

Alexander Blum is a medical student at Tulane University School of Medicine aspiring to become a physician researcher dedicated to global health and health care disparities, with a focused interest in oncology. He’s been engaged in oncology research throughout and before medical school and will spend his fellowship year exploring high rates of cervical cancer and barriers leading to low rates of follow up amongst HPV-positive women in Peru

Deborah is a mother, scholar-activist, and a Fulbright - Fogarty Fellow. She is also a Ph.D. Candidate at UMass Boston. Her research agenda is dedicated to the flourishing of Black women and girls. Her dissertation research examines the radical self-care strategies and indigenous healing practices of minoritized women in northern, Nigeria. Deborah enjoys reading, cooking, street dancing and curating projects that's advance the socio-economic security of Africa and its Diasporas.

I am a Bolivian researcher at San Simon University in Bolivia with a PhD. in Public Health obtained at Umea University in Sweden with a project aimed to assess and improve health care access in remote rural areas of the Bolivian rainforest. My research project is about unveiling care needs and caregiving patterns among Tsimane elders, one of the most isolated indigenous groups in the world inhabiting the Bolivian rainforest.

Emily Hansman will spend her fellowship year in Gaborone, Botswana under the mentorship of Dr. Chelsea Morroni and Dr. Jennifer Wagman. Her research will focus on the treatment of sex partners of pregnant women with STIs to prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes in a high HIV prevalence setting. Her study aims to generate a deeper understanding of social and structural barriers to partner treatment and equip health services with insight to better serve this population.

My name is Phoebe Juma. I am a physician based in Nairobi, Kenya. I am also a fellow studying Clinical Infectious Diseases with the University of Nairobi, in my final year of studies. I am a Forgarty Fellow with the GHES consortium and my study site is in Nairobi. I will be developing a clinical algorithm for the management of Community acquired pneumonia in People living with HIV in resource limited settings.

Ramya is a social epidemiologist and mental health equity researcher. She is training to become a mixed methodologist. Ramya has multiple marginalized identities which drive her interests in social justice, and research to improve service delivery for marginalized populations. She will be working to understand trauma, depression and substance use barriers to PrEP delivery among female sex workers in Lusaka, Zambia.

Dr Ian Maheti Mbano is a postdoctoral fellow at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI), working on a north to south collaborative project evaluating the LACTIN-V clinical intervention. LACTIN-V is a live probiotic containing Lactobacillus crispatus and a clinical trial is underway testing if this intervention can skew the vaginal microbiome to healthier, Lactobacillus dominated communities. He hopes to contribute towards health care delivery in resource limited regions.

Minh Nguyen will spend her fellowship year at Hanoi Medical University in Hanoi under the mentorship of Vivian Go, PhD. Her research will focus on examining PrEP awareness, uptake and persistence among adolescent MSM in Vietnam, barriers and facilitators of these behaviors as well as preferences for an eHealth intervention to improve PrEP uptake. Her research interests include implementation science, HIV prevention and treatment, and STI antenatal screening among pregnant women in Vietnam.

UJMT (UNC, JHU, Morehouse, Tulane). Dr. Nicholus (MBChB, MPH, PhD(c) ) is an international laboratory systems strengthening consultant with a special focus in strengthening HIV viral load, early infant diagnosis (EID) and specimen referral programming across Africa, and has worked for the Global Fund projects in various countries. Currently, Nicholus is focusing on generating data that will inform key policy decisions to managing the growing concern of HIV low-level viraemia in Uganda.

My name is Nate Nessle; a husband to an amazing wife, father to 3 vibrant children (2 biological and 1 adoptive), and a pediatric hematology oncology physician in the NPGH consortium as a Fogarty fellow. I believe no child with cancer should die from a fever. Over 10% of kids with cancer die from a fever in Africa compared to <0.5% in US, and our study in Kenya aims to eliminate this disparity.

I am staff pathologist at MNH, the largest National referral hospital in Tanzania and affiliated teaching hospital for Muhimbili University of Health and Allied sciences (MUHAS). I will be working in a project that will evaluate the feasibility of Implementing HPV testing for cervical cancer screening in care and treatment clinics (CTCs) for women living with HIV in regional referral hospitals in Dar es salaam, Tanzania.

Sarah Nuss is from Boston, Massachusetts and is an MD candidate at the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. She developed an interest in health equity via public health research in Peru and Costa Rica. She went on to work for Partners in Health in Chiapas, Mexico, where she became interested in global surgery systems strengthening. The Northeast Regional lead for the Global Surgery Student Alliance , she is an active member of the Global Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery Initiative

Daniel is a Ghanaian biochemist and academic. He is a research group leader at the Department of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology and the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens, Ghana. He is an Academic Partner of the African Centre of Excellence for Mycotoxin and Food Safety, FUT-Minna, Nigeria. His research interests focus on the development of strategies for prophylactic and long-term treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Awirut Oon-arom, MD, a LMIC GloCal Health Fellow, is working as a psychaitrist and assistant professor at Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University. Dr.Awirut’s research interests are substance use, co- occurring psychiatric disorders, mental health in gender-diverse people, and health consequences. His research will focus on effects of sexualized drug use among MSM and the HIV PrEP care continuum in Thailand with potential role of mobile health interventions for PrEP

Khanh Pham, MD, MS is a board-certified internal medicine and infectious diseases physician at Weill Cornell in New York City. Dr. Pham is conducting clinical research in Tanzania that examines the interplay between schistosomiasis, cardiovascular disease, and tuberculosis under the mentorship of Jennifer Downs, MD, PhD. His research efforts have been recognized several times and includes receiving a Burroughs Wellcome Fund from the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene.

Zolelwa Sifumba, a medical doctor from South Africa, working currently at the Africa Research Health Institute conducting research in the field of Tuberculosis, a field she is passionate about as a survivor of Multidrug Resistant Tuberculosis. For years she has contributed to the global fight against TB as an activist and advocate and now through research continues to work to bring the voices of those affected by TB to research and as a result, global policy around TB care.

I am a GHES Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University Cheick Anta Diop, Dakar Senegal. My LMCI mentor is Prof Daouda Ndiaye and my US affiliation is Yale University and Prof Amy K. Bei is my US mentor. My expertise is on genomic surveillance of infectious diseases, including malaria parasites and viral infectious agents. My fellowship year will focus on optimizing and implementing a pooling amplicon deep sequencing approach for Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance monitoring in Senegal.)

Fiona Sylvies is a medical student at Tulane University School of Medicine with interests in microbiology and women's health. Her global health career began in Bolivia where she studied the impact of Western lifestyle on the cardiovascular health of indigenous groups. She completed a Master of Global Health Sciences at UC-San Francisco, where she studied pediatric febrile illnesses in rural Malawi. For her Fogarty year, she will study the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam.

I’m a neurologist graduated from Cayetano Heredia University, and I’m from Peru. I work specifically in the field of neurogenetic and degenerative diseases. I’m part of a multidisciplinary team in the neurogenetics division of the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Neurologicas, in Lima, working in favor of individuals and families with these entities. My team and I carry out research on diseases such as: Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, Huntington's, Steinert's, Hereditary Ataxias, among others.

Alex Zhuang is a fourth-year medical student at Boston University aspiring to become a surgical oncologist. He is passionate about working at the intersection between public health and surgery and will be spending the next year implementing quality improvement trainings to reduce surgical site infections. In his free time he loves bringing people together with music as a DJ.
